Plastic Alternatives For Travel (and just life in general)

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans. I don't know about you but I want to reduce my contribution to the ever-growing plastic mound. Over the past year, I've been making a number of plastic switches, which are perfect for both travel and everyday life.
In the world of Covid-19, facemasks and hygiene are essential. Over 200 billion face masks go into the environment every month, use a re-usable facemask instead of a disposable one to reduce waste.

FOOD and DRINKS
As an effort to reduce the chance of spreading Coronavirus, many restaurants and cafes have opted for more disposable products. Think before ordering.
We all love a morning coffee or a coffee whilst stroll around the local area. Opt for a reusable coffee cup to save on unnecessary waste. I recommend the collapsible Stojo 8oz or 12oz as they are a perfect size! It comes with a silicone stopper (prevents spillage), and a heat protector sleeve, all of which are dishwasher safe. There are two larger sizes available which also come with a silicone straw (16oz or 24oz).
One of the main ways to reduce plastic usage is through using reusable water bottles. You are able to drink tap water in most countries, but if not the hotel usually has some form of filtered water machine for you to use. I recommend the Stojo 20oz bottle
as, again, this is collapsible so makes great use of space when not in use. The bottle lid is also attached by a handy loop so you'll never lose it. You can also loop the cap around a bag strap if you need your hands free!
Keep a small collapsable metal straw in your bag to make sure you're saving the turtles. I love drinking cold drinks out of a straw but I hate plastic straws. Restaurants and bars, however, just love to give them out. I always make sure I have my small straw in my bag as it makes up almost no space.
This is not only convenient but makes you much more sustainable. Instead of using plastic/polystyrene from a takeaway or streetfood vendors opt for this little lunch box. Alternatively, you can prepare your own lunch for a day trip to reduce waste if you're going on a more remote trip. This Wheat Straw box comes with a fork and a spoon and three sealed containers.
SHOPPING
If you're planning at shopping at some local markets, or purchasing fruit to eat at a later date, make sure you have a couple of mesh bags. These stop you from needing the plastic ones provided or paying for more reusable ones if they are provided. I recommend the above set of six as you get three different sizes; perfect for different sorts of things.
BEAUTY AND TOILETRIES
Aerosol deodorant is tremendously bad for the environment as it is contributing to the greenhouse effect. Not only this but the single-use canister simply adds to waste. I recommend using a deodorant such a Wild. It is a subscription-based service with a sustainable mission, delivered straight to your door. Plastic-free packaging, a vegan deodorant, and a sturdy holder make it a perfect travel companion.
Disposable razors are a waste of money and time. Instead, opt for a sustainable razor, Estrid. Much like Estrid, it is a subscription-based service with a sustainable mission, delivered straight to your door. These razors are the best razors I've ever tried. You can also order a handy travel pouch which protects your razor from other items in your suitcase.
Typical tampons have plastic applicators, and sometimes chemicals in the tampon itself. Using an organic tampon is not only better for your body, it's better for the environment too. I use 'Ohne' organic tampon. Again, a sustainable subscription service straight to your door. The applicators are made out of cardboard and biodegrade.

Another staple, and every looked beauty item. Instead of purchasing plastic body wash and shampoo every time you're out, why not just order a refill for your metal container. These are great for travelling too as they make the liquids inside much more secure.
These are just a few suggestions of how you could swap plastic for other materials. Not only do they save the environment, but they also make travelling more convenient and saves spend money unnecessarily.
